When someone starts at a new job, they want to try to get to a place where they feel comfortable as soon as possible. Most people want to be able to feel as though they are having fun while they are working and for the most part that means getting along with the people they work with. While true friendships are something that are built over a longer period of time, there are specific ways people can learn how to win friends at work.

The main thing to always keep in mind when you are trying to turn strangers into friends is to not come across to over the top. While you are feeling out your new co-workers, they are also feeling you out. If you come across as some kind of a spaz, it will be hard to ever win over those you work with. Trying to get people to be your friends without learning what it is they actually like to will only backfire as well. If you truly want to make friends and not just have someone who you can go for a beer with once a month, you have to learn who the people are who actually go drink a beer.

One thing that should be a topic that should be avoided at all costs is politics. Until you have felt everyone out and know all their proclivities this is simply going to be a subject that should never come up. On the other hand, if you are flat out asked about your political leanings and you actually do lean one way or the other, it is best to be straightforward. Claiming that you do not follow politics, only to run into someone at a rally will only cause questions after the fact. Honesty, as old as this saying is; is always the best policy.
