There are few feelings better than being promoted or earning a raise, making you feel not only welcome in a business environment but also giving you confidence for future projects and leadership roles. There are several ways of positioning yourself for a raise that can pay off big time.
The first thing you should do is decide that you deserve a raise. This is a tricky situation, as well all overvalue our efforts while devaluing the efforts of others. Take on extra projects and overtime so that your boss sees you as ambitious and hard-working; approaching him or her with nothing but a request is a poor decision.
Once you think you are over the hump, begin early by reminding a manager about your contributions. Do this subtly; get any data about how your efforts have improved the company or the department and compare the achievement to previous model employees. Do not bring up the idea of a reward or a raise yourself, but rather check to see what the average raises or promotions have entailed.
The seed is in your manager’s head, so try to let it grow. Project yourself at all times at work, whether it is dressing sharply or providing good suggestions to co-workers, so that people get the idea that you are important.
When it is time to ask for a raise, pick your target and then go for the jugular. Wait until a boss is not overloaded with deadlines, negative reports, or tough decisions. The best time is ideally after you have completed a project. Do not dance around the issue: be assertive and say that you feel your efforts merit a reward or more responsibility. A boss may not be amenable, so prepare a Plan B. This can be vacation time or a better project or the chance for a performance reward.
